How Nija Charles proved that college can't teach a star how to shine.

Before she began to write for artist like Beyoncé and Cardi B, she was making beats in her dorm room at New York University.

At 21 years old, Nija Charles has become one of the most sought out songwriters in the music industry.

Nija realized that she had to get ready for her career sooner than she expected when an A&R flew her and her mother out to Los Angeles for the first time.

"An A&R from RCA records flew me out to California. He took my mom and I out to dinner one day and he was like...listen, I don't know what we have to do but your daughter has to leave school. Her career is going to take off and she’s going to be the biggest thing in the next year. School is going to hold her back.” Charles recalled.

“That was the first step in the right direction of her accepting the fact that school might not be for me.” said Charles.

Nija reflected on how music has always been a part of her life. She was raised around music and she credits her upbringing as what propelled her into music.

“My dad was a house DJ, my grandmother was in the choir, my auntie and uncle make beats as well and we are kind of close in age so seeing them make beats sparked my interest.” said Charles.

Although she grew up in a creative environment, initially her passion for music was viewed as a hobby.

Charles recalls her mother being very adamant about her attending college.

"The reason why I went was because of my mom...I had to go to college." said Charles.

While being a student at NYU on a full-ride scholarship, Charles was also perfecting her craft as a music major.

“If I was going to go to college, I was going to go for something that I wanted to do.” expressed Charles.

Nija took her passion and managed to make her dreams a reality.

“I had played a song that had Chris Brown’s vocals on it and that was the first, woah this is really happening moment.” Charles recalled.

With her career off to a great start, Nija Charles has no plans of stopping any time soon.

When asked what she wanted out of this year, Charles responded by saying she wanted number one hits and the start of a legacy.

We can only anticipate on what we will hear next from Charles as she announced that her first solo project is currently in the works.
